Night Creams

You think you have a beautiful face. Actually you have. Acne attack has come like a bolt from the blue. You thought that such things can never happen to you. You are frustrated and angry with you. You begin to lose temper. You wish to pop all the pimples.

But caution. Don't do these two things.

Do not lose temper and do not tamper with your face! Popping pimples is no solution. If you pop one acne, another four will appear in its support, by next morning.

Opinions on popping or squeezing pimples differ. Articles on the subject contradict each other. Why should you carry the pus formation on your face? Pop it up says one section of the people. Others counsel you against it. By doing so, you are inviting more troubles, as the bacteria will spread to other parts of the non-affected area of the face.

Squeezing method to get rid of pimples is dubbed as the play of the perverted mind. You may own this habit permanently and become slave of it. It doesn't look decent either. Rather, it is an ugly habit.

But if you get rid of the pimples overnight, due to some special reasons, popping them up seems to be the only alternative. Some say that it should be done on a selective basis, zit by zit. Do this to get rid of the pus formation in 'ripe' zits, but don't do this to red, just appeared pimples. If at all you need to use the needles, use the sterilized ones. Wrong application of the needle may give a fresh lease of life to your pimple cluster.

If you have decided to pop up the pimples, do it with precaution. Wash your hands before you commence the operation. Puncture the top of the pimples lightly with utmost care, with a sanitized needle. For this purpose, you can use alcohol or give it a flame touch. Your attempt to do away with the zits should not result in scars.

Popping pimples is not the end of your problems. Post-popping steps are very much necessary for you to follow. Over the counter medications to be used during the day and night are available in plenty, but here again the choice needs to be made in consultation with your dermatologist. Proper maintenance of your face needs the experienced and expert advice.

This is great – it will give me menu ideas, too. One thing that we do that I like is that we have started always having pizza on Sundays, so I never have to really think about what to make that day. Sometimes it's frozen, sometimes homemade, and sometimes carry-out. And then we have at least one Mexican night and one Italian night per week. You could also have one Chinese food night, one vegetarian night, one American night, and/or seafood night, and then you went out for supper one night, you would only have to plan within those categories, and it would give you instant variety.

Yes, there’s tons of info, but it really depends on what you’re looking at. Some contain salicylic acid, which is a metabolite of asprin. It reduces inflammation as well as reduces some sebum (oil). It is specifically a beta-hydroxy acid (which specifically refers to the location of the hydroxyl [alcohol] group on the carbon chain in reference to the first carbon). Because it is this type of acid, it can smooth out skin a little. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria because of oxidation effects, but because it acts as a peroxide, it can be incredibly drying, which can result in skin producing more sebum (in concentrations of 10% or more). Sulfur is used to dry out oil, so you might see it in a lotion formulation or suspended in alcohol for topical application (this is more formulated for adult rather than teenage acne). Some skin care products contain alpha hydroxy acids, which have acid groups on the alpha carbon as opposed to the beta carbon. This class consists of lactic acid (found in milk), malic acid (found in apples), glycolic acid (derived from pineapples), citric acid (from citrus fruits), and mendelic acid (from a flower, i believe, but I’m not sure). These acids work by chemically exfoliating the skin. This means a layer of skin is dissolved, allowing new skin to come out. Many skin care lines contain these, and if they’re used properly, they can be good for your skin; however, an excess of these can lead to stress for your skin and thus pain. There’s also corn starch (zea mays) which reduces oil and shine to make you look less oily (and to reduce sebum which causes blackheads). Some creams contain vitamins like retanoids that can fade scars (such as vitamin A or E [tocopheryls]). They also help to reduce visible aging due to UV exposure. [accutane is a concentrated vitamin that helps clear skin] Other creams might have metals–of particular interest is zinc, which is somehow beneficially for your skin. I’m not sure about the exact specifics. Many natural lines will take advantage of a few ingredients such as: witch hazel (helps to reduce swelling and smooth skin) yogurt cultures (probiotics instead of antibiotics can promote good bacteria on your skin) honey (contains trace hydrogen peroxide to kill bacteria, the sugars help moisturize your skin and it acts as a humectant, good minerals for the skin are present) rooibos (natural source of AHAs and zinc) caffiene (helps reduce inflammation, reduce redness, and improve overall skin appearance–tight skin) etc. and so on. There is a lot of chemistry that goes into skincare. If you’re wondering about this for yourself–like what skincare line you should try, that’s difficult to say because it isn’t just the chemistry of the products, it’s the chemistry and biology of your skin. Adult skin and teenage skin are very different. The turnover rate (how fast cells divide and how quickly your skin repairs itself) are very different–it’s about one month for teenagers and young adults and increases to about 60-75 days for an older adult. So that’s why there are multiple skincare lines for adults and children. Someone might be sensitive to benzoyl peroxide which could exacerbate acne. Or, you might go a natural route preferring probiotics as opposed to antibiotics, or you could want something that would anti-age as well as prevent against acne. Please let me know if you have any questions. Skin care science is one of my favorite subjects. Best, chemkitten
