Creams Containing Hydroquinone

You can find in the market a variety of treatments to for skin bleaching: laser, microdermabrasion, oral treatments, cryotherapy, and commercial creams.

Using a skin bleaching cream or lotion seems to be the most common treatment. It is easy to find on the market a great variety of them. You will need prescription to buy some of them, and find the rest over the counter.

Most of the skin bleaching creams contain ingredients that can reduce the amount of melanin production by inhibiting tyrosinase, a key enzyme to melanin synthesis. Three of the most commonly used are:

- Hydroquinone. Potentially harmful but very effective. Skin bleaching creams containing hydroquinone are banned in Europe but available in USA (concentrations of 2% over the counter and higher by prescription).

- Arbutin. It is extracted from berry plants and it is a natural alternative to hydroquinone. It seems to whiten skin very effectively with no dangerous side effects.

- Kojic Acid. It is a natural ingredient extensively used in skin bleaching creams. It is found in a type of fungi, and also when fermenting rice to make sake.Besides inhibit melanin production, it has antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Finding an effective skin bleaching cream should not be a problem. However, specially if your hyperpigmentation problems are not too serious, you can also try some home remedies. Keep in mind that home remedies, like commercial bleaching creams, must be applied regularly as a part of your daily routine.

Before applying a commercial skin bleaching cream or a home remedy, clean thoroughly your skin, it will increase the effectiveness.
(CAUTION: Do not apply on the eyes area)

- Buttermilk. One of the simplest skin bleaching home remedies is buttermilk. It contains lactic acid, which exfoliates the skin. Once the top layer is removed, the skin renews itself, appearing lighter in skin tone. Just apply buttermilk with a cotton ball. After15 minutes, rinse off the buttermilk with warm water.

- Potato. This is also a simple home remedy to lighten your skin. Shred a potato to form a paste, and then spread it on your skin. Try not to strain the potato when grating it, you want all the juices. They are the ones that contain the bleaching agent that will lighten your skin. Allow the potato mask to dry and rinse it off.

- Almond Paste. Almonds have lightening agents. Soak 5 almonds in a bowl of water overnight. Peel and mash them, converting them into a paste. Apply the paste on your skin. When the paste has dried, rinse it off with warm water.

- Orange peel. Sun dry some orange peels. When they are fully dried, grind them to make a powder. Add milk to it, make a paste and apply it on your skin. After fifteen minutes, rinse it with warm water.

- Sandalwood paste. Make a paste using sandalwood powder, lemon juice, tomato juice and cucumber juice. Spread it over your skin, and let it dry. Rinse with water.

- Lemon juice and honey. Using lemon juice, honey, almond and milk powder, make a paste. Apply it for 15 minutes and then rinse.

- Oatmeal, tomato juice and curd. Mix well the three ingredients and apply the mixture on your skin. After fifteen minutes, rinse it using cold water.

- Turmeric powder and lemon juice. After makeing a paste with these ingredients, apply it on your skin. After fifteen minutes you can rinse it with water.

If your problem with hyperpigmentation is not too serious, any of these home remedies can be effective. For more severe hyperpigmentation problems, you better look for a commercial skin bleaching cream.

    ingredients containing mercury?
i need to know what face and body creams contain mercury and/or steroid and hydroquinone. (harmful skin lighteners) and what are some ways of reversing the effects of 2% hydroquinone?

    • Vahid says:

Check packaging materials and any instructions or ingredient lists carefully. Look for:
-Hg (the chemical symbol for mercury) or the word ‘mercury’
-Mercuric iodide, mercuric chloride, mercurous chloride, ammoniated mercury, amide chloride of mercury, mercury oxide
-Instructions to avoid contact with silver, gold, rubber, aluminum, and jewelry
      -The word ‘Poison’
Hydroquinone is usually harmless if used not too much.

This is so embarrassing, i need serious help….?
I have been using this lightening cream ( bio Claire) It doesn’t contain hydroquinone but it has kojic acid that lightends the skin. It has lighten my skin so nicely but the problem is it has left my legs soo white with dark spots. Its very disgusting and embarasing, i need someone to recommend a nice body cream that will tone my skin evenly. I really need to get rid of these dark sports on my legs.

Plus it has left my veins so visible now…… 10 points

    • Anonymous says:

Why would you want to do that to yourself.. As someone with light skin I would love some color..

      Anyways..

Well you can either use auto bronzer to darken your legs to match the spots or go to a doctor to have them prescribe a cream to lighten the dark spots…

You can use the lotions that contain self tanner but they are very mild and will not work unless the contrast is very mild.

      Hope this helps !

    Hyperpigmentation treatment Plz Help!?
    Dear Doctor/ Spotremoving,

My name is Omajit male 31 years. Asia(india), yellow race.

I have hyperpigmentation from last many years (5-6years). I am using a cream
    of Hydroquinone 3% 2months.
But it is not fading, instead some slightly reddish color in the area which
    I apply.
    I got the information from,
    http://www.diseasencure.com/Hyperpigmentation.html
and, ‘These two requirements are exactly met by a natural skin care cream
containing *Extrapone Nutgrass Root* and *Phytessence Wakame*.’

I wanted to know where can I find the cream which is Genuine and it can cure
my hyperpigmentation and how long it will take to cure.
I wanted to know can I get it through counter in india(Karnataka)

Please let me know the complete detail.

    Thanks and regards,
    Omajit

Hi Omajit. Firstly I want you to know that most of the websites on the internet are rubbish and pure marketing.
Secondly, since the hydroquinone cream didn’t work, obviously your pigmentation goes quite deep, possibly below the epidermis and into the dermis. This would mean that dermabrasion is useless since it only rubs off the uppermost layer of your skin, the stratum corneum.

I always give my patients a choice. There’s no point in forcing them to choose something threy may not like. The first is the use of ablative lasers to correct your skin colour. Hyperpigmentation of your skin is caused by the production of melanin in the area after collagen is sent there to rebuild damaged tissue. It is quite expensive all around the world unfortunately.

The other option is much more accessible. Start yourself on a product with azelaic acid or adapalene. I prefer adapalene because this compound promotes cell turnover so skin renews itself much more quickly. Thus, pigmentation deep down in your skin will go away quicker. Note that this process depends on the natural rejuvenation of your skin as melanin levels gradually decrease over time (months or years we’re talking about).

What are the chances of getting cancer from using skin bleaching creams?
I recently bought a bleaching cream that contains the ingredient Hydroquinone that from what ive heard, can cause cancer. I’m scared, and I’m not sure if I should start using it or not. What exactly are the chances of getting cancer and how exactly would it cause cancer?

Thankyou >< Thanks Ellen :) I’m starting to persuade myself not to use it anymore.

    • Ellen says:

Hello…Anything that changes cell structure or alters normal cellular production or division has the potential to cause cancer. Cancer by definition is simply an abnormal growth of cells. When you use this cream it is going to be altering the normal cellular response of the cells that produce pigmentation. This is how this cream is potentially “cancer causing”. Why risk it? I’m certain that you are beautiful just the way you are. There is no need to use this cream. So you are darker skinned or perhaps there are some areas that are lighter than others who cares? You are a wonderful person who deserves to be healthy. I hope that this has helped is some small way. Best of luck to you.

If you’ve used both, which one works better? Thanks.

    1. Ambi Fade Cream for Oily Skin

I am fully aware that these proucts contain hydroquinone, which isn’t exactly good for you. I’m not asking for a “lecture” on the dangers of it, and I’m not looking for anyone to tell me that my freckles are beautiful and to leave them alone. Please refrain from those types of comments, because they’re not what I’m looking for.

But do you think its ok if i use the cream just long enough for the freckles to fade? then use sunscreen to maintain the look so the freckles wont come back? they are big freckles and not alot of small dots. just big ones. i hate them, and please dont say dont bleach them because im just going to ignore what you say. i need some help, please dont give me bad advice and then me go screw everything up :’(

As of now i would say i’m gabrielle unions complextion but i would like to lighten my complextion by 3 shades. I tried some of the over the counter creams that contain hydroquinone but i would like to know if there is anything stronger.

    • Sarah D says:

You really need to be careful using hydroquinone, quite strong and the side effects can lead to cancer!!!

The best products I used to lighten my skin up to two shades over a period of say three months was the Lighter and Brighter Skin Lightening Ritual, mainly the LIghter and Brighter Age Resisting Skin Lightening cream which works wonders and you will see results within 4 weeks!!!

to get more information FREE check out http://www.thebeautychallenge.com or http://www.ndskinlightening.com

Skin Lightening should be long term therefore any rapid miracle cures overnight will be more damaging long term.

    • smartsassysabrina says:

Yes hydroquinone is safe. Some people, obviously not you, have bad reactions to it, but if you’re already using the cream without problems you’re fine.

  18. Becca says:

How long does the redness from an allergic reaction last?
I developed a redness on my face from a topical cream containing hydroquinone. No itching, just slightly raised red spots on the areas where I put the cream. It has faded a bit, but its been about a week and its definitely not gone. How long will it take? Since I originally used the cream to get rid of hyperpigmentation, im quite upset since it caused my face to look much worse. Is it possible that my face will never go back to the way it was?

    • Jordan W says:

It depends on how long you have applied it to your face. My sister used it and had to go to the doctor. Apparently it thins the skin thus more closely exposing the blood vessels in your face to the elements resulting in mild irritation. She had to use a special face wash and cream that her dermatologist gave her for a few months. I remember that he said that prolonged use of the cream can cause mutation to the skin cells resulting in permanent disfiguration if used in too large a dosage or for too long a period of time.

  19. says:

    If hydroquinone is so bad…?
Why do dermatologists recommend it? I went to the dermatologist with my mom today and saw something for hyperpigmentation that contained 4% hydroquinone.

I have scars that I would like to lighten to match the rest of my skintone and I’ve seen soaps and creams and stuff in this African store by my house with hydroquinone in it. I would like to try them, but I’m a bit wary because I know how big skin lightening is in Africa & Asia and the stuff might be really strong or dangerous. I don’t want to lighten my skin…just clear up some darker spots.

Anyway, even in Rite Aid there are creams with hydroquinone. I know you have to wear sunscreen with it, but is it really as bad as I’ve heard? I’ve heard it causes cancer, makes your skin thin and peel, and eventually just makes the skin darker than it originally was…? Thanks…

    • Kimberly says:

Most over the counter products with hydroquinone have less than 2% in it anyway. You won’ t be able to bleach your whole skin with that. It “brightens” the skin. Lightens the dark spots. If the scar is not TOO old, it might work. Just use as directed. You wont “catch cancer” from normal use of any product, you’d have to use it excessively over time for there to be any real danger.

    • Dee says:

this is the best i could find… it doesnt specifically give how much to what darkness and how light it will make things… without pictures, its very hard to determine how long it will take for your dosage to work properly, or if you need a stronger or lighter dose.

  23. Reyna Loop says:

Has anyone used face bleach for eyes?
I have one bad dark circle underneath my right eye.
    Not TWO black dark circles.
I only have one dark circle that i believe is caused to hyperpigmentation from wearing badly fitted prescription glasses.

I have tried MAC concealer, bobbie brown, make up forever concealers, i have spent $400 on concealers for this circle but it has not worked.
I have tried eye wonder cream, hydrolyze, juvaderm, cliniques cream, and more, and i have spent $250 on creams.

this is in the span of 1 year and a half.
So i don’t care for reccomendations on cucumbers, potato slices, teas, creams, or concealers because i have done everything i could.
Anyway, the last thing i was considering was bleach cream.

I’ve heard women use bleach cream containing hydroquinone that is meant for the face (ACNE SCARS, HYPERPIGMENTATION, ETC.)
Has anyone used products like black and white cream, any bleach cream?
would this be effective for this circle?
I know they sell 3 brands on walgreens with 2-3% hydroquinone and it is meant for the face but i have not read any one who has used it for dark circles.

Any inputs on if they have used these brands or any kind of hydroquinone for dark skin under eyes would be very helpful.

I only have on dark circle though, not two.
I don’t want to see a dermatologist because i spent so much on allergy check ups and stupid creams that i have no money to spend….
And the dark circle extends my eye to the bottom of my nose almost to my right ear.
    as though i was diseased/hyperpigmentation.

    • Mukunda M says:

There is an epidemic of under eye bags and circles and many are reported by those in teens or early twenties. The main reason is reaction to skin sickening toxins in skin care, cosmetic and skin medicating products. Many teenage girls use 20 or more products daily and an alarming number of products contain skin(and health) harming toxins. See this site “Skin Deep Cosmetic Database. A Feelgood Resource” The Database tested many thousands of products and identifies which ones are the most harming and those which are non or only minimally harming. So first thing to do is select the none or least harming products.

Then try these safe, natural treatments that quickly and permanently get rid of the one dark circle. They really work and have helped many on Answers

This is a response I received from wannabeblue28:
“Hi Mukunda M. I have just been rubbing my face with oil using my fingers and hands and It has made a HUGE difference in my complexion after just one night. …… My skin looks so much tighter everywhere and i no longer have bags under my eyes! Thank you so much for your post, I have been suffering with acne and under-eye circles since i was young.”

She had seen an answer I gave about how vigorous face massaging with pure natural oils had permanently rid my face of acne AND removed my bags/circles. Massage greatly tightens skin under and around the eye area and the bags go away. Find Answer with a search “Mukunda M vigorous massage to remove eye bags/circles”

      The most helpful ones are:
(Using both hands together) massage with palms and front of fingers held together
      (1) Do long up and down sweeps close to nose from chin area up to near eyes.
      (2) Do another up and back at an angle from chin point to cheek bone.
      (3) Do fast up and down massage close to eye from cheek bones at an angle of 45 degrees (on your crows feet).
Best if do for several minutes daily – will markedly tighten skin in eye area and diminish the circles in the first two or three days.
IMPORTANT: To avoid skin pulling first make facial skin taught by partially opening mouth and pulling lips firmly back against teeth (tightens most of face)

Use any natural oil. Extra virgin olive oil works well for many.
Additionally facial yoga exercises help a great deal. Find on You Tube. Do the “The lion face” and try to hold for 30 seconds. A variation of that is protruding the tongue as if trying to touch tip of nose with tip of tongue.

YOGA MEDITATION is a great help and is easy to do. It enables you to completely relax and gives you deep, restful sleep. 6 or 7 hours of restful sleep is considerably more beneficial than 8 or 9 more hours of non restful sleep. I found Siddha Yoga meditation was the most beneficial.

My first dermatologist prescribe me hydroquinone 2% and 4% for some freckles and small dark spots left by acne AND I NEVER WANT TO USE HYDROQUINONE AGAIN!!

It really does work to brighten the skin, freckles and getting rid of the dark spots real fast and it can be used for 3 months. The problem with H is that it leaves your skin extremely sensitive after you stop using it even while using sunscreen. And as a result the lighten freckles got darker and i got MORE FRECKLES than before in places I never had. My skin in general stayed brighter so it my work fine for you if brighter skin tone is what you need. Get a higher spf and really avoid the sun.

      Hope this helps :)

What are over-the-counter creams that contain hydroquinone?
I want to get one to lighten some dark spots and fade acne marks.

    • a girlfriend says:

Hydroquinone is in Acne Scarring Lotion from AcneFree line(University Medical). This product is in Acne Scarring kit, also contains SPF-15 oil-free moisturizer. Look for University Medical AcneFree line in your pharmacy or in Target.
Kojic Acid could be even more effective for lightening up dark spots and other skin discolorations. You won’t find products with it over-the-counter, but it is in many department store lines, such as Origins, or in Jan Marini professional line lotion (there the percentage of it is higher, thus more effective). Kojic Acid is derived from a Japanese mushroom and was used for centuries in Asia.
Home remedy for dark spots and acne marks is lemon juice mixed with honey or alone.
And don’t forget to wear sunscreen – sun darkens the spots.

Black nail scars, doctor prescribed hydroquinine containing lightning cream…is it DANGEROUS?
Well,i had many black nail scars bought about by my brother in childhood which has not faded .
I have fair complexion on my rest of the body excluding face which is slightly darker (.i didnt took care of my skin till recently , had many sun exposures, many nail scars, dark circle)So i consulted a skin speacialist on july 2010 and he prescribed a lightning cream-melalite 15 cream(Hydroquinone USP 2% w/w, Oxybenzone USP 2.5% W/w, Octinoxate USP 9.0% w/w) which contain hydroquinone . i got best results after application within 1and half months..and discontinued till today..now it seems tat the previous results are unchanged(i think it can be due to body changes)..and i wish to start its application.
BUT I FOUND ON internet tat hydroquinone is dangerous sometimes get opposite results, carcinogenic, long term use can cause darker complexion….and in my case i want to apply just for 2-3 months…my doubt is this term is long term and is am risking?
would it cause dependency (i mean, stopping using it after the prescribed period would go back to the condition before treatment??) ?
Am sticking on tat cream coz i found it had better results on my skin and i didnt had any allergic reaction or itching,etc..also i dont want to waste time and energy on trying other products..
And a big thanks to all

Please answer! I watched too much Gray’s Anatomy, scared that freckles might be skin cancer! Hydroquinone?
Because of a scar on my chin, I started using Palmer’s Skin Success Eventone Fading Cream to lighten it up so that it would go away. The cream works very well, I noticed results in five days. However, I also noticed two freckles where I had applied the cream. I have heard that hydroquinone can cause cancer and has been banned in some countries, but I’m not so sure if it’s as dangerous as everyone is trying to make it sound, because U.S. dermatologists say it’s a safe and effective product. So the cream I use for the scar contains 2% hydroquinone in it, which is a small enough amount to be sold over the counter. Are the new freckles on my chin a sign of skin cancer from the hydroquinone or are they from the six hours I spent in the sun swimming? The freckles are small and look like the ones on my cheeks. I will be really cheesed off if this product gave me skin cancer because I have only been using it for a week.

A doctor said Melalite Forte Cream ( contains Hydroquinone ) . Does that effective ? Hydroquinone really works ?

    • me, myself, and I says:

Yes, I’ve heard that it works, although I’ve never actually tried it. I found a lot of helpful information on acne.org, I suggest that you look there! Even if you don’t have acne, there is a whole section on hyperpigmentation.

    Skin Whitening- Hydroquinone URGENT?
PLEASE READ THE WHOLE THING SO U CAN UNDERSTAND ME-
Hi I´m a light-skinned Latino, but with the sun here in Texas my face and arms are noticeably darker than the rest of my body. I´m pale as a ghost everywhere else but the face, neck and arms, and I wanna be light skinned again, cuz thats my natural color. Well I just bought at Walgreens the Pamers Skin Success (Fades Dark spots evens skin tone) with 2% of hydroquinone, I know it has been tested on rats and they developed cancerous cells and stuff but it hasnt been proved that on humans it has the same effect so I don´t care about that (I mean if the FDA hasnt banned it yet and OTC products containing it are available, its not as dangerous as some people say) Ok I´m plannig o appliying it twice a day on THE WHOLE FACE? I´m gonna use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer SPF 55 Sun Block at the same time. Tell me is this safe? Has anyone used creams with hydroquinone? I dont wanna end with darker skin or I dunno, even damaged skin for ever. Please dont tell me that accept my skin color cuz I do, cuz I´m light skinned naturally but my face is really (well not really) but darker and I wanna be kinda whiter (that sounds bad anyways).

P.S. I really have to walk on campus and I expose myself to the sun like a lot but since I´m wearin Sunscreen at the same time. Is that safe?

    Ok Thanx
adisha can´t… I gave u thumbs up cuz u took the time to answer my question but who said all mexicans have bright skin?? I didn’t. I happen to be light skinned and of course we, Mexicans, and I´m proud of being Mexa btw, come in different colors and I ain’t better nor worse than anyone else. I look funny cuz my skin doesn´t look even so that´s y I´m askin this question ok? I didnt say anything against African Americans, Black is beautiful!

    • 13th Floor says:

I used hydroquinone for six months and had no problems. Using a sun block is the most important thing to getting these exposed, darker areas back to their previous lighter shade. It will probably take quite a while – and you will have to be very diligent about using it every day but results should start showing in a couple of months.

  37. BGood says:

How do I know if this applies to me,they declare that long-term use of lightening creams contain hydroqui…?
How do I know if this applies to me?they declare that long-term use of lightening creams that contain hydroquinone and kojic acid can lead to exogenous ocronosis, a darkened, bluish discoloration of the treated area. This is only true for those with hydroquinone. Anyone with dark skin tones especially African Americans are prone to exogenous ocronosis if they are exposed to hydroquinone for too long.

Can I create my own skin whitening cream ?
containing Arbutin, Tretinoin and Hydroquinone and how? Where do I get these ingredients from?

    • Scott says:

You probably could but i would guess that it would be a bad idea. yo might accidentally put to much in and cause you skin to go all weird or even invisible like the Kevin Bacon in that movie where he had to paint on his face, then you look a bit like a clown and a bit like an alien.

question on skin lightening creams for African Americans?
I’m a black male that wants to lighten some dark areas of my skin. I have heard how products with hydroquinone are harmful so I’m looking for bleaching products that don’t contain that and that and I’ve found Maladerm and Lightenex. I have heard some negative reviews about Maladerm but none about Lightenex. Does anyone know of any other skin bleaching creams without hydroquinone and have any thoughts about Lightenex?

  40. - says:

Hydroquinone is found in skin bleaching products. Can you name some other hydroquinone lotions, creams, etc.?
Other kinds of products used on the skin, besides skin bleaching preparations, that contain hydroquinone.
Thank you for your answer, Princess. No, it’s not a homework question. I’m 36 years old, and do not attend any kind of school.
Heloo Fairlady. Thanks for your answer. But that is not what I’m looking for. That is a list of products that are specifically for bleaching or lightening the skin. I’m wondering what other skin care products, BESIDES skin lightening products, hydroquinone is found in.

    • Princess K says:

Is this a homework question? lol. Well hydroquinone(a cancer causing ingredient) is also found in many scar removal creams – including zenmed’s scar removing ‘skin eraser’ : http://www.zenmed.com

most skin lightening creams contain dangerous chemicals which can be harmful to you long term.

a better option is to use natural beauty regime. going natural enhances your skin complexion without the risk of skin disorders.

can anyone tell me how effective palmers cocoa butter is to the body?
does it really treat stretch marks and really tones the skin? i hate to use creams which contain hydroquinone, moreover i need to get a very nice skin colour, any help?

    • emily51501 says:

I asked my doctor about this and she says that cocoa butter is good for the skin but will not get rid of stretch marks.
She said the only way around stretch marks is to use these creams on a regular basis before you get stretch marks. Basically you could use anything that keeps your skin hydrated so that there is more elasticity in the skin, that in turn reduces the risk of getting stretch marks.

I was given a cream containing 1,4 benzenediol (hydroquinone) to use on my face to improve pigmentation. Is it safe to use it during pregnancy? is there a safe option?

Your best bet is to call a pharmacy..they will let you know.
Please call though, because I did last week with a anti-itch cream I’d been using for my eczema and they told me it was in a Class C.. which is not recommended for pregnant women.
